Batavia was surveyed in 1788, but it didn't welcome residents until Virginia's Ezekiel Dimmitt moved to town in 1797. Development was slow, though, and it took until 1814 for the area to be officially planned. George Ely purchased Captain Francis Minnis' initial survey and took charge, naming the community Batavia, perhaps after the New York city. Ten years later, Batavia became the new seat of Clermont County, taking the title from New Richmond. In 1842, Batavia was officially incorporated as a village in its own right.

Today Batavia is a small but prosperous village. Its downtown area, featuring a Heritage Ohio Main Street, has several restaurants, boutique stores, and other businesses. Discover its small-town charms on your next vacation.

When to Visit Batavia, OH

Batavia has its best weather during spring and fall. Batavia doesn't experience the same tourist spikes of larger cities, but its limited accommodation options fill quickly during summer and the festive season. High demand drives up prices; you'll typically pay less during spring and fall.

If you're flexible with your travel dates, book a September or May getaway. Both months enjoy comfortable temperatures in the upper 50s to mid-70s — perfect for strolling around Main Street.

Batavia's summers aren't as hot as other parts of the country, with average highs in the mid-80s. However, the humidity can make these relatively mild conditions unpleasant.

Batavia hotels are at their most affordable after the festive season, but only the bravest travelers take advantage of these low rates. Average temperatures in the teens are a powerful deterrent in this area, which is far from ski slopes.

Best Things to Do in Batavia, OH

Since it's a village rather than a big city, Batavia doesn't have the high-profile attractions of many tourist hotspots. But there are still plenty of things to entertain you while you're in town.

Batavia is a fantastic place to practice your golf game. There are three golf clubs within the village: Elks Run Golf Club, Cedar Trace Golf Club, and Stonelick Hills Golf Club. Elks Run Golf Club is the most popular after earning rave reviews in Golf Week and Golf Digest. The 163-acre championship course takes advantage of the natural hills and creeks. While it's challenging, it's also a beautiful place to play. However, don't underestimate the other two courses. While less well-known, Cedar Trace and Stonelick Hills are both 18-hole courses designed to challenge novices and experienced players alike.

The Tri-State Warbird Museum, next to the Clermont County Airport, is a must for history buffs. The 22,000-square-foot space features a treasure trove of wartime memorabilia, including two hangars full of historic military aircraft, recreated barracks filled with authentic World War II items, and much more. The museum remembers America's military contribution and the soldiers who sacrificed their lives.

Red Barn Antique and Flea Market offers treasures of a different kind. Browse the unique wares while listening to live musicians.

Batavia is also a wonderful place to reconnect with nature. While the village is never crowded, you can really lose yourself in its green spaces. The East Fork State Park has 85 miles of hiking trails. There are also paved and unpaved walking trails at Batavia Township Community Center and Park, along with a popular fishing pond, picnic area, and basketball and volleyball courts. Whether you want to burn those calories or simply relax while watching the world go by, you'll appreciate Batavia's beautiful parks.

Batavia is a sweet village that provides a welcome contrast to inner-city living. Recharge your batteries in this friendly Ohio community on your next getaway.
