Welcome to Delaware, Ohio, whose first settler arrived and set up housekeeping in 1807. More settlers made their way to the area, and by 1808, the first framed house was erected. In 1808, a plan was drawn up and filed, which was the first step that turned a settlement into an official town. An interesting road through the pages of history was traveled by the citizens of Delaware. Although it was a small community, it lost by only one vote to become the new capital city. By 1851, railroads were making their presence known and Delaware became a stopping point along the line.

Best Time to Visit Delaware, OH

When planning your vacation itinerary, take into consideration that the busiest month for tourists is July, with May and June close behind. During the three-month span, hotel rates increase. This is in part due to the friendly weather and the fact kids are out of school and parents are planning summer getaways. The least popular time for visiting Delaware, Ohio, is in November. The November through December months remain a slow time to plan a visit.

Delaware's temperature range is like a rollercoaster with its many ups and downs throughout the year. In order of the hottest months, the list begins with July, followed by August, and then June. The average temperature is around 85 degrees Fahrenheit with a low of 65 degrees. For a dry vacation with minimal chances of precipitation, plan your vacation for February, first, followed by January, and then August. Chances of snow are also slim.

Overall, spring runs from March to May with high temperatures of around 82 degrees and chances of rain. Spring remains the busiest time for tourism after summer, specifically August, when crowds increase, hotel rates are raised, and accommodations can become limited. Only die-hard winter fans make the trek to Delaware during the coldest time of year when temperatures dip into the low 40-degree range and drop even further to the low 30s.

The Olentangy Indian Caverns is an opportunity to explore the natural beauty of underground caverns formed millions of years ago out of limestone. The caverns form a winding network of rooms that were used by the Wyandotte Indians for many purposes. The cavern rooms were used as a safe haven from the unfriendly tribes, served as a place to stay during inclement weather, and as a place for sacred ceremonies. The Wyandotte tribesmen also used the caverns as a workshop for making arrows.

Many of the artifacts found in the caverns are on display at the museum. The caverns and museum close for part of the season and reopen on April 1. Enjoy a guided tour of the caverns or take your time and go it alone with a self-guided tour. If you're feeling brave, there's also a flashlight tour that only allows the light from a flashlight to guide you through the dark passages of the caverns. For the kids, there are additional activities that include gem mining, playing a round of miniature golf, and visiting the petting zoo. There's also a gift shop, playground, and nature trails.
