In the mid-19th century, the Lansing and Howell Plank Road Company was formed to build a toll road that would allow for easier travel between Lansing and Detroit. This toll road cut through the area that is now East Lansing, encouraging development and individuals to take up residence there. The city was then known as College Park and was going to be incorporated under that name in 1907, although the local legislature changed the name to East Lansing before incorporating. Michigan State University's campus was set up in 1857, and at that time, the majority of students and faculty resided on the campus.
