As the whaling industry declined, so did the area's prosperity. Tourism keeps the town and its harbor busy nowadays. Take a trip across the water to Chappaquiddick Island via ferry boat. This small, less developed island is included in the boundaries of Edgartown. It's the location of the Japanese gardens, a golf course, and miles of wildlife sanctuary. The size of the island makes it very accessible via bike. Chappaquiddick is also where the tragic accident involving Senator Ted Kennedy occurred in the 1960s.
Edgartown was in the spotlight again in the 1970s when director Steven Spielberg decided to film his blockbuster hit "Jaws" on location. A lot of the town's landmarks and buildings used for the fictitious town of Amity can still be seen today. It's worth devoting some time to visiting these sites or taking a guided tour if you're in the area and a fan of Spielberg's work.
The picturesque community of Edgartown is on the beautiful island of Martha's Vineyard. It's across the Vineyard Sound from mainland Massachusetts. Thousands of visitors travel here to experience Edgartown's old-world charm and explore its natural places. The town center has retained many of its historic homes and architecture. Some of the buildings are private dwellings while others have been converted into inns, restaurants, and shops. The Old Whaling Church and the Dr. Daniel Fisher House are two of the top historic sites to visit on Main Street.
The Martha's Vineyard Museum is another must-see attraction if you're interested in learning more about the history of this area. The Edgartown Lighthouse is available for touring as well. Top outdoor attractions on nearby Chappaquiddick Island include the Mytoi Japanese Gardens, Cape Poge Lighthouse, and Wasque Wildlife Sanctuary. However, the biggest draw to Edgartown in the summer is South Beach. Much of the coastline here is as wild and windswept as it was centuries ago.
