Enid, OK owes its existence to one of the greatest mass migrations in history: The Great Land Rush in 1893. Virtually overnight, a town was born as thousands of settlers rushed to stake their claim in the wide-open Oklahoma frontier. Enid was also situated on the cusp of the Cherokee strip, a region historically referred to as Indian Territory. Multiple railroads laid track through the region, cowboys drove cattle up the Chisholm Trail, and all kinds of travelers passed through, making the history of Enid's establishment something like a Western movie. You can visit some frontier style film sets during your visit to Enid, at Simpson's Old Time Museum. This family general store turned Old West museum allows visitors to belly up to the bar, get locked into a reproduction jail, and see some historical artifacts. It's a fun experience that comes with a tall tale or two, courtesy of the longtime Enid residents who run the museum. Best of all, admission is free.

Follow the old Chisholm trail through Enid, marked out with concrete posts, and observe the ruts from thousands of cattle hoofs and wagons as cowboys drove their longhorns across Indian Territory from 1867 to 1884.

Through hard times, Depressions, and droughts, Enid's population has leaned on their pioneering spirit to diversify the economy above and beyond its wheat agriculture and oil refining, attracting new industries. The town has become a vibrant city that still attracts industry, from light manufacturing and food processing to the trucking industry and retail stores. Vance Air Force Base is in Enid, as is the Enid branch campus of Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The town even boasts its own symphony orchestra. Come for the history and stay for the culture. You'll enjoy your time in Enid, OK.

When to Visit Enid, OK

Enid, OK can get rather cold in the winter. You can visit, of course, but if you're thinking of walking the Chisholm Trail through town, you had better bring your coat, hat, and gloves. The same advice holds true for a visit to the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center.

This museum and historical building complex requires some walking and time outside to really take in all the sites. The center is dedicated to teaching the history of the Old West, from claim staking to homesteading on the frontier, and on to the present day. The fascinating outbuildings include a one-room schoolhouse, a government land claim office, a furnished Victorian frontier home, and a settler's church. Take your kids to marvel at the reproduction sod house and cook pots, revealing how challenging life really was in the old frontier.

Visit in spring, summer, or fall to best enjoy your time at Government Springs Park. The cowboys who traveled the Chisholm Trail with their steers frequently stopped here to rest and water the herd. The gazebo is a picturesque spot for pictures, weddings, and performances.
