The city has a long history. Eunice was founded by land developer C.C. Duson, who already had experience creating towns as he and his brother are credited with the founding of Crowley, Louisiana, in 1887. Prior to that, Native Americans called the area home. Eunice was set up as a village in 1894 and soon followed as an incorporated town in 1895. The city is named after C.C. Duson's wife.
As of the 2010 census, fewer than 12,000 people were residing in Eunice, which is referred to as Louisiana's Cajun prairie capital.
