Where can you check the historic sites of Fort Morgan, CO?

Fort Morgan was an important stop along the Overland Trail, first established as Camp Wardwell in 1865 with the intent of protecting immigrants and supply trains going to and from Denver and nearby mining operations. The fort was rechristened Fort Morgan only one year later in 1866 to honor the late Colonel Christopher A. Morgan. Though the fort did not officially operate for long, closing in 1868, it was at one time home to 19 different companies and regiments.

The town of Fort Morgan was not established until 1884, on a site that lay just south of the old, abandoned fortifications. The area's military connections resumed during World War II as Fort Morgan became home to Fort Morgan State Armory and a military school linked to the West Coast Air Corps Training Center.

One of Fort Morgan's most famous citizens is also linked to the World War II era. Famed big-band musician and composer Glenn Miller attended high school in the city. It's said that in his high school days, Miller once played trumpet from the roof of the town high school building. His jazz standards, “In the Mood,” “Moonlight Serenade,” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo” provided the soundtrack to the war years. Visit the Fort Morgan Museum and Library for more in-depth historical detail about Fort Morgan's past.

You can visit a significant piece of Fort Morgan's past or even drive across it. The Rainbow Bridge was built between 1922 and 1923. The unique design features a series of arches built in steel and reinforced by concrete, and every arch is capped by a gas-powered light. At the time, it was the longest archway bridge in the nation. The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
