The city is also adjacent to Fort Gordon and lies about 15 miles east of Augusta. The city is accessible by Georgia State Route 223, otherwise known as Robinson Avenue, and Interstate 20, which connects Atlanta with Augusta and Columbia, South Carolina. You can also get to Grovetown by flying into Augusta Regional Airport, 17 miles southeast, or by flying into the public-use airport at Daniel Field, 11 miles east.
Grovetown has a quirky origin story. Poet Paul Hamilton Hayne petitioned the government to establish a post office in the area. As a man of letters, he needed ready access to mail them. Postmaster Charles Clifford opened the post office in 1877, and at the same time, the industrious fellow also served as the owner of the corner store and the train station agent. Rail service and top-notch hotels brought visitors in droves from Augusta in the summer, as residents sought to escape the swampy summer heat of the area around the Savannah River.
Camp Gordon was established in 1942 as a World War II training camp, bringing a boom of prosperity to Grovetown and rapidly transforming the town from a sleepy agricultural town to a modern, growing community of over 12,000 residents. Today many people come to Grovetown to visit military family and friends on base at Fort Gordon.
Learn all this local history and more at Grovetown Museum, housed in a restored historic home from the late 19th century. Be sure to check out Liberty Park Community Center and Goodale Park for playtime and relaxation. For indoor fun, check out Gordon Lanes Bowling Center and the Active Climbing gym.
Many people come to Grovetown each year to watch the prestigious Masters Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club, which is known to be one of the most challenging courses in the world. It's also one of the most beautiful, thanks to the rolling greens, adorned with azaleas ablaze with blooms just in time for the annual tournament. Play your own game at Gordon Lakes Golf Course at Fort Gordon. After a game of golf, take in a show over a good meal at the Fort Gordon Dinner Theater.
Whether you're planning on seeing the Masters Tournament or just passing through for a day or two, Grovetown is a small Southern town with a lot to offer, to learn, and to experience.
