Founded in 1791, the city of Hamilton was originally called Fort Hamilton, a nod to its status as a frontier military fort. Its name commemorated Alexander Hamilton, one of the nation's founding fathers. By 1880 the fort was abandoned and Hamilton carved out a new identity as an agricultural and trade center. Its manufacturing industry was booming by the mid-19th century; local factories created farming machinery and equipment, mill saws, paper, carriages, firearms, whiskey, beer, and more. During this period, Hamilton welcomed German and Italian immigrants who diversified the local culture.
For a vacation destination rich in history and artistic opportunities, Hamilton is difficult to beat.
