Because of Adrian's history, the town has had a passionate view of baseball that really picked up through the mid-1800s. Sturgis Anson, Adrian's brother, was also a very skilled baseball player who went on to play for the University of Notre Dame with his brother Adrian. Later in life, the brothers came back to Marshalltown to play for the town's baseball team with their father Henry Anson, founder of Marshalltown. Their team was known as one of the best baseball teams in the state, winning the Iowa state championship in 1868. All three of the Anson men who played on the team got offered contracts to play baseball on a professional level, and Adrian was the only one to take a contract, which took place in 1871.
