Needham was first settled in 1680 and was officially incorporated in 1711, so it has a long, storied history. By 1865, a knitting mill in Needham became a leading children's apparel brand. Around that same time, William Emerson Baker, the man who improved the mechanical sewing machine, moved into town and built two man-made lakes. The community experienced a surge during the 1930s and has remained a popular Boston suburb.
Many notable people have resided in Needham, including Nobel Prize-winning virologist Thomas Huckle Weller, actor John Slattery of “Mad Men” fame, six-time Olympic medalist Aly Raisman, and Ben Karlin, executive producer of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert Report.”
Today, Needham is a popular destination for travelers wanting to explore everything Greater Boston has to offer. Whatever your reason for visiting Needham, be sure to find the right hotel that allows you to experience the best of Boston.
What time of year is best to visit Needham, MA?
The best time to visit Needham is from summer to early fall when the weather is mild, and the outdoors are ripe for exploring. The only downside to visiting from June to October is the fact that it's peak tourist season in Boston, so you'll have hiked hotel rates and crowds to contend with. Still, you can't beat the Boston area in the summer, which makes the trip worth it.
Popular events to consider attending include Boston Pride, Cambridge Arts River Festival, Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, Boston Comic Con, and Oktoberfest. You'll also want to catch a Red Sox game at Fenway Park.
Winter is frigid in Boston, which keeps most tourists away. Average temperatures rest between the 20s and 50s, so pack plenty of layers and a trusty winter coat if you're visiting between November and February. If you do visit in the winter, however, you'll pretty much have major attractions like the Freedom Trail to yourself.
While spring is beautiful in Needham and Greater Boston, temperatures remain chilly. On the bright side, you'll find incredible hotel deals from March through May, not to mention access to numerous festivities like the St. Patrick's Day Parade, the Boston Marathon, the Boston International Film Festival, and Boston Calling.
