The area now known as Raynham was first settled in 1639 as Taunton, which was originally founded by Elizabeth Pole, the first female to ever found a town in the United States. The area was previously a refuge for Roger Williams, who was fleeing sedition charges for supporting payment to the native tribes for the acquisition of their land.
Later into the 17th century, the discovery of bog iron found along the Forge River brought the first successful ironworks company to Plymouth Colony. Its success paved the way for other iron works throughout the settlements. The area finally achieved its current name in 1731 and became a location for building ship hulls before they were floated down the river to receive their final fitting.
Now, the city is known as a popular tourist site where visitors come from all over to see some of the most well-known sites of the first established U.S. colonies. Visitors can enjoy numerous local parks, breweries, and historical museums.
The Best Time to Visit Raynham
Raynham's location in the northeastern part of the United States means that it will see the typical changes that come with each season. The summer months are hot and dry, and the winter season is cold and snowy. Due to this, the most popular time of year to visit is June through August. This time of the year will give you the warmest temperatures, which provide you with the ability to enjoy all the area's outdoor activities. Unfortunately, due to the short tourist season, peak times can mean higher costs for accommodations and more difficulty finding them.
Another popular season for travel to the area is the early fall. While the temperatures may be getting a bit chillier, the fall colors are simply amazing. You will also find that much of the seafood in the state is in season and available at excellent prices. The best time to visit if you want to go for the fall colors is the first two weeks in October.
Travel to the area is not recommended in the winter unless it is for winter activities, as storms can make travel difficult and restrict access to the area's indoor activities.
