Rates shown are nightly rates before taxes and do not necessarily reflect all Summit, NJ discounts available. The chart reflects the cheapest Summit hotel for each day and each star rating category.

The moderate-sized city of Summit, New Jersey, is located in Union County and is ranked as one of the richest towns in America. The city was first incorporated as Summit Township in 1869 and, along with New Providence Township, became incorporated as a city in 1899. The history of the city's name has been attributed to Summit Lodge, which was a house on top of Second Watchung Mountain, where jurist James Kent lived in the early 1800s. Another possible source for the name is from when a local sawmill owner who granted passage to the Morris and Essex Railroad to create a route to "the summit of the Short Hills."

The land was originally acquired through a purchase from the Native American inhabitants in the mid-1660s, with the earliest European settlers arriving by the early 1700s. During the American Revolution, the area was referred to as Beacon Hill, because it was used to set bonfire beacons to notify the militiamen of advancing British troops.

By the 19th century, the Summit area had become a vacation spot for the wealthy residents of New York City, who would visit the area to enjoy the fresh air and relax in one of the numerous large hotels that developed in the area. After World War II, the city's population expanded, and it turned into the suburban community that it's now known for.

The Best Time to Visit Summit

The summer season in the Summit, New Jersey, area is known for its warm and humid temperatures, and the winters are known for their extreme cold. Throughout the year, the area will see an average fluctuation between 23 and 86 degrees. Thanks to the warm temperatures and abundant sunshine from mid-June through late September, this has become the most popular time of year to visit Summit.

This not only creates more crowds, but it also makes accommodations more costly and difficult to book. While the temperatures aren't as warm, the area has beautiful fall colors and little precipitation in the fall.

If you're looking to spend your vacation enjoying winter sports, then the best time of year to visit Summit will be the month of January, when you'll be sure to have enough snow for any sport. Just be cautious when traveling during this time of year, as winter storms can cause delays in travel.
