The territory that would eventually become Clark originally was a plat of several early villages. The Robinson Plantation House and The Squire Hartshorne House, structures from the 17th century, harken to that era. The 17th-century Dr. William Robinson Plantation Museum is a must-see in Clark for history lovers. Built in the 1690s, it was the home of Robinson, one of the first doctors in New Jersey. The park was created in the 1920s and was designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm. John Charles Olmsted and Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. carried on the work of their father, Frederick Law Olmsted, known as the father of American landscape design. Droescher's Mill, which can be viewed in nearby Cranford, is the last mill remaining on the Rahway River and the oldest continuously operated commercial building in the state. Droescher bought the mill in 1902 and renovated it to become Cranford Oil Stone Works, which created whetstones and oilstones.

Also in Cranford, the Crane-Phillips House is a Victorian cottage that was constructed using the architectural style of Andrew Jackson Downing, the first architect in the United States. Known as The Little House on the Railway, the structure is now a museum. Josiah Craig initially built the house in about 1840 for his son, Josiah Crane Jr., who sold the property to Henry and Cecilia Phillips in 1867. They expanded on the cottage in the Downing style and lived there until Henry died in 1911. The Crane-Phillips House is also on the National Register of Historic Places.

Among the exhibits in the museum are Native American, American Revolutionary War, and American Civil War artifacts. You'll also find 19th-century tools and farm implements, a Victorian parlor, a Victorian girl's bedroom from around 1870, and more.
