Sun City is a census-designated space located in Maricopa County. The moderate-sized city is part of a group of sister cities that are popular retirement communities and vacation rental areas for snowbirds.
The city is built on the former site of a western ghost town known as Marinette. When the city opened in 1960, there were only five homes, a golf course, and a recreation center. During the first open weekend, a crowd of more than 10,000 people arrived to check out the new community, which was 10 times the expected turnout.
Developers dreamed of creating a self-contained community to attract senior retirees. The city has its own grocery store, medical facilities, retail and dining centers, and a host of recreational activities. The area is now known as a popular vacation destination for travelers looking to escape the cold of the winter months and enjoy the sunshine and a few rounds of golf on one of the area's eight golf courses.
