Taylor was founded in 1876, when the Texas Land Company auctioned off plots of land in the area ahead of the arrival of the International-Great Northern Railroad. The railroad played a key role in Taylor's development, so it's only fitting that its name pays tribute to railroad official Edward Moses Taylor. The city was originally called Taylorsville, but its name was shortened to simply Taylor in 1892.
Taylor's earliest residents were European immigrants from Germany, Austria, and Slavic nations. They helped Taylor become a key shipping point for grain, cotton, and cattle. While it's grown over the years, Taylor is still a relatively small city with a gentle pace. With steady population growth of just 1.2 percent, less than the state average, Taylor is unlikely to lose the small-town charm that residents and visitors love.
When should you travel to Taylor, TX?
The prospect of a summer getaway is often alluring, but Taylor is best avoided in mid-year. Like many Texan cities, Taylor experiences hot, humid conditions during the summer months. Temperatures often are in the mid- to high 90s from June to August, but the steamy conditions often make it feel even hotter. Even Texan natives struggle during the summer months, so out-of-towners should definitely steer clear.
Taylor's weather is much more favorable during spring and fall. The humidity drops along with the temperature during both these seasons. Daytime temperatures usually sit in the 70s and 80s from March to May and September to November, so these months are ideal for sightseeing in Taylor.
Winter can also be a good choice, as this season is much milder than in other parts of the nation. Hotel rates can jump during the festive season, though, so wait until after the New Year to save cash.
