The first European settlers arrived in Haverford in 1682. Two years later, these Welsh families tried to negotiate with William Penn to establish a separate county whose government used their native language, but their dream never came to pass.
The name Haverford comes from the town of Haverfordwest in Wales, and early records indicate that residents often called the community “Harford,†a Welsh contraction. Officially known as the Township of Haverford, this relaxed community was primarily agricultural in nature until the 1920s when the railroads purchased acreage along Cobb's Creek for development. Once the railroad sprung up, Haverford's first planned suburban communities quickly followed.
Haverford has long been known for its golf courses. In fact, the township holds the distinction of having hosted two major golf championships at two separate golf clubs. The Merion Golf Club has hosted the U.S. Open several times since 1934, and the Llanerch Country Club hosted the PGA Championship in 1958.
Today, Haverford Township is divided into smaller neighborhoods and census-designated places that reflect their history or planned developments. The community is also home to Haverford College, a private liberal arts college.
