The area now known as Rockford was first inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Ottawa, Mascouten, and Hopewell. Early surveyors noted tribal trails branching through the area despite a lack of archeological finds. One of the first European settlers was Alexander Palmer, who came to the area in 1843. Palmer visited the banks of the Rogue River to help construct a dam and sawmill. Soon after, other settlers took up residence, and by 1845, the settlement had five houses.
In those early days, the community was called Laphamville. By 1865, a railroad extended through the village, bringing a newly arrived settler from Rockford, Illinois, who proposed the new name for the town based on his former residence. The community was officially replatted as the Village of Rockford in 1866.
Today, Rockford's most notable landmarks include the Rockford Dam and the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail that runs through the downtown area. Several notable people hail from or have lived in Rockford, including actor Dick York, Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein, poet Julia A. Moore, and meteorologist Ginger Zee.
