The ponds of Shugakuin Villa, the open spaces of the Ryoanji Temple, and the cherry blossoms of the Philosopher's Path are perfect for a serene vacation. Add a little life by heading to Gion, and sample Kyoto's world-famous geisha district, where hostesses still dress with the fanciest kimonos and whitest faces just to entertain guests.
