Sulphur Springs, TX: A Community with Deep Roots and Ongoing Growth
The city got its name from the natural sulfur water springs that were once common in the area. These springs were believed to have healing properties, and early settlers were drawn to them. Over time, the springs disappeared as the city developed, but the name and its history remain. In 1854, Sulphur Springs got its first post office and was officially established as a town, although it was initially called “Bright Star.” Mail was delivered by the Pony Express, and the name was changed to Sulphur Springs in 1871 when it became the county seat of Hopkins County. Around this time, the town began to organize a local government and build public services. William A. Wortham, a businessman who helped launch a newspaper, was the first known mayor.
Sulphur Springs set aside land for a university in 1857, and several schools operated over time. One of the most well-known was Central College, which later became Eastman College and Conservatory of Music and Art. Industry started to grow with the arrival of the railroads. A train line reached Sulphur Springs from Mineola in 1872, which helped bring more settlers and businesses to the area. Another rail line connected Sulphur Springs to Jefferson in 1879, and a third line came in 1887, eventually stretching to Fort Worth. These connections helped turn the city into a trade center. Around the same time, other industries like ice production and banking began to take off. The City National Bank, still in operation today, started in 1889.
From the late 1940s through 1995, Sulphur Springs became well-known for dairy production. The local economy depended heavily on milk, and the city gained recognition in this area. Today, visitors can learn about that part of history at the Southwest Dairy Museum, highlighting how milk was produced and processed. Modern Sulphur Springs is a mix of old and new. It has become a hub with parks, museums, and annual events.
