The Canibas tribe originally inhabited the area we now call Waterville. The Canibas lived there until 1692 when their village was burned down during King William's War. The original European settlement was part of Winslow, but Waterville broke away when residents on the west side of the Kennebec River became frustrated that they couldn't cross the river to attend town meetings. Waterville was incorporated as a city in its own right in 1802. It built its economy on its strong fishing, agriculture, lumbering, and shipbuilding industries.
While Waterville's downtown area isn't as vital as it once was, there's plenty to get excited about in Waterville. The suburban areas are on the up and up, with retail outlets, restaurants, and other new businesses enhancing these residential zones. The local Colby College gives the city a youthful energy. Despite recent developments, Waterville is still small enough to retain its original charm.
