The town is named after Julian Carr - a southern businessman, industrialist, and philanthropist of the late 1800s. However, Carr was a very infamous figure as he openly supported slavery, was a member of the Ku Klux Klan, and was involved with public harassment of Black people on several occasions. The town of Carrboro had to make a statement in the form of a truth plaque saying that the community does not support any of Carr's values or actions. In addition to that, Julian wasn't a resident of the town at any point in his life. After incorporation, the city was named Venable, after chemistry professor and University of North Carolina president Francis Preston Venable. But just two years later, it was renamed after Carrboro as he bought a mill in the area while expanding his business, thus providing the city with electricity for this mill to function.

It is located to the North of the downtown and will awe you with the area's distinctive architecture. These buildings represent former mill houses constructed for local mill workers and their families back in the day. Today they are used as living accommodations for UNC students, and some of them became venues for live music events. Even though many houses were deconstructed over time, such dwellings still count around 150 units, centered on West Poplar and Sykes streets.
