La Mirada is a densely populated suburban community with plenty of attractions of its own, from the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts to the Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center. It's also a university town, home to Biola University.
The land that is today known as La Mirada was once part of Rancho Los Coyotes. Chicago printer, mapmaker, and publisher Andrew McNally, former Vice-President of Rand McNally, relocated to the area in the 1880s and purchased a parcel of that land to establish his dream of a "gentleman's ranch."
McNally and his son-in-law Edwin Neff planted olive, orange, and lemon groves; established processing facilities for the produce; and developed a railroad station. Later, in the 1950s, the city was billed by the media as "the Nation's completely planned city," and it wasn't long before these plans came to fruition.
