Compton is one of the oldest cities in Los Angeles County and is centrally located, earning it the nickname Hub City. It was settled in 1867 by a group of Pioneer families who were traveling south in search of a better life. The settlers built a church and a schoolhouse, and in 1888 the city of Compton was incorporated.

On March 10, 1933, Compton was hit by the largest earthquake to ever devastate the area. The earthquake destroyed nearly all the city's original structures. Fortunately, most of the earthquakes to rattle the city since have been nearly imperceptible. Residents quickly began the process of rebuilding, and the population of Compton increased.

All of the city's public parks are nicely maintained. Kids here have plenty of things to do, and the population thrives on great food and community events. On the weekends they come together to watch kids play Little League games and listen to emerging musicians perform on the local scene.

Compton is a resilient community with a low median age. In fact, it's average age is 25 — compare that to the rest of the country's median age of 35. In addition, more single females live in Compton than in most other cities in the United States.

When to Visit Compton, CA

Compton almost always has beautiful weather. Even during the winter, the temperatures are in the 70s during the day and rarely colder than the mid-30s or 40s at night. During the summer, temperatures can sometimes rise above 100 degrees.

The average temperatures in the Los Angeles area range from the 50s to the 70s. Chances for precipitation are much higher during the winter, summer, and spring, with the lowest chances of rain in the hotter summer months. In fact, summer is a great time to visit and enjoy Compton's outdoor attractions because it almost never rains.

Due to the wonderful year-round weather, you can visit Compton comfortably any time. Just be aware that the winter temperatures are lower and chances of rain much higher. Packing an umbrella and a light jacket will help keep you comfortable throughout your winter stay.

The Sheraton Gateway offers free airport shuttles, a beautiful outdoor pool, a concierge, safety deposit boxes, handicap-accessible facilities, luggage storage, a gift shop, and two restaurants on its property. Compton is a mostly residential area in Los Angeles. Thus, there are not a lot of hotels in Compton proper. In fact, the LA Crystal Hotel & Casino is the only one. The rates are low though, and the newly renovated hotel is less than 1.5 miles from the city center.

Rooms at the LA Crystal Hotel are comfortably furnished and come with free Wi-Fi. Most have a king bed or two queen beds, as well as a couch, chaise lounge, or a workstation with a desk. The family suite rooms even have bunk beds to maximize the number of guests a room can comfortably sleep. In all, the LA Crystal offers eight different room types.

In the lobby, you'll find a lounge where you can enjoy a drink. At the on-site casino, you can play slot machines or try your hand at Texas Hold 'em or blackjack.
