The name "La Habra" translates to "Pass Through the Hills," a passage used by Spanish explorers on the Portola expedition in 1769. Long after that time, the area was largely inhabited by grazing herds of cattle and horses. In 1839, the first rancher established his Rancho Cañada de La Habra.

La Habra was officially founded in 1896 and incorporated in 1925. Soon, the town was producing more avocados than any other town in Southern California. Visit the La Habra Historical Museum if you'd like to learn more. The Museum is open on Saturday afternoons and admission is free.

You may also spot historic markers around town. Head down La Habra Boulevard — once the original El Camino Real route from the old mission days — and look out for replica 1906 bells that mark significant sites along the way. This corridor is called "The Boulevard of the Bells." The first bell indicates the site of the first post office.

Over 61,000 people reside in La Habra today. It is both a quiet community and the perfect hub for Southern California explorers, as the city lies within an hour's drive of beaches, deserts, and mountains. Given that La Habra is close to so many notable Southern California sites of interest, the city's Recreation Department has partnered with Good Times Travel to provide single- and multi-day tours.

Single-day tours from La Habra can take you to Mission Inn, Griffith Observatory, the Getty Center, Descanso Gardens, and Edwards Air Force Base. Tour itineraries often include lunch or dinner, concerts at the Disney Concert Hall, or a Broadway play. If you'd like to take in a show closer to La Habra, visit La Habra Depot Theatre.

Take a multi-day tour to California's Central Coast, Death Valley, Yosemite, Joshua Tree, or even cities like San Francisco or San Diego, all starting from La Habra. Signing up for La Habra's tours takes the guesswork and the legwork out of planning your travel itinerary.

Those who prefer to do their own driving will also have plenty of entertainment options. La Habra is located under 10 miles from major theme parks like Disneyland, Disney California Adventure Park, and Knott's Berry Farm. After a day at the parks, you'll want some great food. Visit the Anaheim Packing District, which packs a ton of dining options into a single venue.

The mission-style facade houses an open-plan marketplace full of food vendors — from crepe stands and ice cream vendors to pizza joints and pop bars — so everyone in your group is sure to find something they crave. Sit down and enjoy live music while you dine.

You don't have to go far, however, to enjoy all the amenities La Habra has to offer. Citizens and visitors enjoy 20 distinct city parks, a tennis center, children's museum, community theater, and much more. La Habra also offers plenty of shopping options close at hand, from pharmacies like CVS to big-box retailers like Wal-Mart, Target, Costco, and Kohls. Getting around town is easy, since three California State Highways pass through the area, including state Route 39, state Route 90, and state Route 72.

The Children's Museum at La Habra is often ranked among the best children's museums in the state for its hands-on exhibits, outdoor dinosaur garden, and historic 1942 caboose. The museum also introduces new exhibitions twice a year.

Whether you're looking for an affordable and convenient place close to major theme parks or need a hub for exploring Southern California, La Habra will meet your needs and exceed your expectations.
