It opened in 1982 with violinist Michaela Paetsch performing as soloist with the Colorado Springs Symphony Orchestra (as it was called in those days). The Pikes Peak Center has since achieved international approval for its design and acoustical attributes, and artists and critics have spoken highly in their compliments of the Center. The United States Olympic Training Centers (OTCs) are three campuses created by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as training facilities for its Olympic and Paralympic athletes. They are located in Colorado Springs, Colorado; Lake Placid, New York; and Chula Vista, California. There is a U.S. Olympic Education Center in Marquette, Michigan and other official U.S. Olympic/Paralympic training sites in Oklahoma City and Edmond, Oklahoma[1], Carson, California, Birmingham, Alabama, and the Pettit National Ice Center in West Allis, Wisconsin.[1]
Some athletes preparing for the Olympics, Paralympics, and Pan-Am Games live at one of the OTCs for a period of months or years, while others visit periodically with their respective national teams for training camps, coaching (especially in sports science and sports psychology), or physical testing. Although foreign national teams are occasionally granted use of the USOTCs, they are used mainly by athletes from the United States.

The Colorado Springs OTC was the first of the three to be built, and has been the home of the U.S. Olympic Committee since 1978. Its location on the former Ent Air Force Base was selected for its relatively high elevation, which is often thought to improve training effectiveness. Its facilities include an Olympic-size swimming pool, an indoor shooting range, a velodrome, two sports centers housing numerous gymnasiums and weight rooms, and a sports science laboratory, in addition to an athlete center and dining hall, several dormitories, a visitors' center, and the offices of both the USOC and U.S. Paralympics.

Garden of the Gods

~4.21 miles from Colorado Springs city center
Hotels Close to Garden of the Gods
Garden of the Gods is a public park located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA.
Entrance to the park is free according to the wish of Charles Elliott Perkins, whose children donated the land to the city of Colorado Springs in 1909.
It contains numerous trails for hiking, walking, mountain biking and horseback riding. One of the most popular trails, named Perkins, has been paved in an effort to combat the erosion of the park's central garden caused by its numerous visitors. Visitors receive frequent reminders to watch out for rattlesnakes in the hot days of summer.
Because of the unusual and steep rock formations in the park, it is an attractive goal for rock climbers. Rock climbing is permitted, with annual permit obtained at the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center. The only requirements are reading the rules, proper equipment, climbing with a "buddy", and staying on established climbing routes. Due to the often unstable conditions of the sandstone—particularly after much precipitation—several fatalities have occurred over the years. This is a very popular bicycle-riding area because of the scenic views, safe one-way recently-paved roads, and healthy clean air.

The Manitou Cliff Dwellings are a tourist attraction, located just west of Colorado Springs, Colorado on US Highway 24 in Manitou Springs.
The Cliff Dwellings' museum is located within the facility and exhibits reproduced Anasazi-style Indian cliff dwellings. The Anasazi lived and roamed the Four Corners area of the United States Southwest from 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1300. The museum was established in 1904 and opened to the public in 1906.
The Anasazi peoples did not live in the Manitou Springs area, but lived and built their cliff dwellings in the Four Corners area, several hundred miles southwest of Manitou Springs. The Manitou Cliff Dwellings were built in their present location in the early 1900s, as a tourist attraction. The building stones were taken from a collapsed Anasazi site in southwest Colorado, shipped hundreds of miles to Manitou Springs, and assembled in their present form as Anasazi-style buildings, some of which are replicas of well-known buildings in Mesa Verde National Park. The project was done with the participation of well-known anthropologist Dr. Edgar Lee Hewett.

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoological Society was founded in 1926 by philanthropist Spencer Penrose to house his growing collection of exotic animals. In 1938, after substantial development, Mr. Penrose incorporated the Zoo as a non-profit public trust for the people of Colorado Springs. This trust was deemed "for the sole purpose of establishing and maintaining a zoological park to provide recreation, education, conservation and scientific facilities in the field of zoology and related subjects, and to preserve the Zoo in perpetuity for the people of the Pikes Peak region."
Today, the Zoo has been successful in transforming a visitor's experience from a passive viewer to an active participant. Visitors are submerged into culture and habitat, inspiring a new respect for the preservation of wildlife through hands-on education and creating a "never to be forgotten" experience.
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Income is generated from earned revenues, membership dues, donations, corporate sponsors and grants.

Pikes Peak International Raceway

Hotels Close to Pikes Peak International Raceway
Pikes Peak International Raceway, also known as PPIR, is a racetrack located in Fountain, Colorado, 20 miles (32 km) south of Colorado Springs and 25 miles (40 km) north of Pueblo. Before its closure in 2005, the track hosted races in several series including the Indy Racing League and NASCAR's Busch (now Nationwide) Series and Craftsman Truck Series.
In addition to its 1 mile (1.6 km), D-shaped oval, the infield forms part of a 1.3-mile (2.1 km) road course and a 1/4-mile (0.4 km) short oval. Its grandstand capacity is 10,000.
On September 30, 2005, it was announced that the track had been bought by the International Speedway Corporation. ISC shut the facility down in November of that year and petitioned NASCAR to move the track's Busch Series date to Martinsville Speedway for 2006.
PPIR reopened September 2008 with a focus on participant motorsports events. A wide variety of amateur racing groups use PPIR for racing, testing and training. Due to NASCAR's ban on testing at tracks with NASCAR races, many NASCAR teams run test sessions at PPIR.
Plans call for the construction of additional road courses, trackside lots and motorsports business related shops.
