Porta Coeli ("Gateway to Heaven") Convent church, or El Convento de Santo Domingo de Porta Coeli in Spanish, is one of the oldest church structures in the western hemisphere located in San German, Puerto Rico. In 1609, the Dominican Order built the Convento de Porta Coeli at the crest of a hill in what is now San Germán Historic District. During the 18th century the Convento was reconstructed and a church built next to it. The single nave church was constructed of rubble masonry with stucco surfaced walls and a wood truss roof.[2] It was restored by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and now houses the Museo de Arte Religioso, a museum of religious paintings and wooden carvings dating back from the 18th and 19th centuries. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places as "Convento de Porta Coeli" in 1976.

It’s very sad that most visitors to Puerto Rico only experience San Juan and surroundings, because this tropical island just begs to be explored, beginning with its lovely beaches. While Luquillo Beach east of the capitol is the most famous beach on the island, it is hardly the best. I often head for the southwestern corner of the island, which has numerous pretty beaches.

Things To Do in Mayaguez: Bioluminescent Bay #11 of 22 Things To Do in Mayaguez
Bioluminescent Bay

The Bioluminescent Bay (or "Bio Bay" as it is sometimes called), is perhaps the world's largest and brightest. The luminescence is caused by micro-organisms (dinoflagellates) which glow whenever the water is disturbed, leaving a trail of neon blue. A combination of factors create the necessary conditions for bioluminescence: red mangrove trees surround the water (the organisms feed off the dead leaves); a complete lack of modern development around the bay; the water is cool enough and deep enough; and a small channel to the ocean keeps the dinoflagellates in the bay. This small channel is the result of Spanish ships' attempts to choke off the bay from the ocean's waters. The Spanish believed that the bioluminescence they first encountered was the work of the Devil ('El Diablo') and tried to block the ocean's waters from entering the bay by dropping huge boulders in the channel. The Spanish only succeeded in preserving and increasing the luminescence. Kayaking is permitted in the bay and can be arranged through local vendors. Swimming is no longer allowed to protect the micro-organisms.

Crash Boat Beach or Playa Crash Boat is a beach located in the northwestern Puerto Rican municipality of Aguadilla. It occupies the site of a former military port used to rescue downed air crews from Ramey Air force Base and still retains some remains of pier infrastructure. The beach is primarily accessed by taking PR-107 to a spur signed, PR-458. These remains have become a popular location for fishing and for jumping into the crystal clear waters. Crash Boat also has two large sand beach areas for general bathing.

Cabo Rojo (KAH-bo, ro-ho) is a city in the south-west of Puerto Rico, on the Western Costal Valley. It is located to the south of Mayagüez and to the west of Lajas, whilst a little to the west of the town lies the Mona Passage. The town is spread over 18 wards and Cabo Rojo Pueblo is the downtown area and the administrative center of the city. It is both a principal city of the San Germán–Cabo Rojo Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Mayagüez–San Germán–Cabo Rojo Combined Statistical Area. It is said that Cabo Rojo obtained its name from the considerable amount of minerals found in its coasts that made the waters look reddish. Cabo is the Spanish word for tip and analogous to the English word Cape in this context. The word rojo, translates to red. According to legend, the name was given by Christopher Columbus himself, although this is highly unlikely. The first church, founded in 1783, was called San José. The present-day main catholic church is called San Miguel Arcángel Church located in the town's square. People from Combate are known as mata con hacha ("those who kill with axes") based on an old folk tale about a fight over the Salinas where those from Cabo Rojo fought with axes against people from the adjacent town of Lajas. The latter apparently fought back by throwing stones and are thus known as tira piedras ("those who throw stones").
