The hotel looks fancy from the pictures....but it's not. I'm sure in its day, it was pretty cool. Now, it's just trying too hard. I paid $100 and didn't feel it was worth it. You pay for the location....which feels kind of ghetto but there's a park and Amtrak station nearby. The room was small, the furniture was pretty beat up. It's saving grace was the bathroom. While small, there was a neat mirror/storage fixture and the bathtub (though it was old) was pretty deep. There's no parking (you have to pay). The A/C worked, and it was neat being on the top floor. We stayed here after a concert....I would have much preferred staying somewhere a little more updated. The staff was nice though. « less

We stayed here about 3 weeks ago and I have held off writing a review until now because I wanted to let my thoughts percolate a bit.
We picked it because it was close to the train station/public transportation, close to the tourism association building, and was reasonably priced. My first reaction when we walked in the front door was, "I'm not staying here." The lobby is a mess. The attitude of the person at the desk was somewhere between insolent and ininterested. There was no help with the bags, nobody to even hold the door open for us, and one of the two elevators did not work. When we made the reservation (in January, for an April stay) we requested a room on an upper floor, away from the elevators & ice/vending. Room assignment? 201, directly across from the elevators & ice. After complaining we were offered a room on the 10th floor, which would have satisfied us except that's a smoking floor. The room naturally reeked, and by the end of our four days, so did our clothing. There was no certificate of inspection in or near the elevator--this may not be a requirement in Texas but I found it disconcerting.
It was an adequate size. Queen bed was fairly comfortable. No closet but a roomy armoire. The bathroom had been updated but the modern sink had no shelf and no place to store any personal items. The shower did not drain well. TV worked but the channel guide provided by the hotel did not match the channels on the TV. AC worked fine. No problems with internet. Free continental breakfast was surprisingly generous and varied; I especially liked the waffle iron in the shape of the state of Texas. There is a free shuttle which will take you anyplace in a 4 mile radius, but it is "first come, first served"--no reservations accepted. The "exercise room" consisted of two treadmills, a rack of towels, and nothing else.
I live in a very old house and I have no trouble embracing things that are not up-to-the-minute. However, a lot of what was wrong with the Hotel Lawrence smacks of inexcusable neglect. For instance, one of the hand rails in the elevator was loose. How much does it take to get someone with a screwdriver in there to fix it? There wasn't a wooden surface in our room that didn't have chips, peeling veneer, or ragged edges. A little furniture polish would at least cover up these imperfections so a visitor's eyes weren't assaulted. Yes, there are free milk & cookies in the lobby each night, but the yummy smell is not enough to distract from the stained carpet, the couches with the split cushions, and the panhandlers hanging around the door.
Walking in the neighborhood, or toward downtown, was easy and straightforward during the day. We chose to walk home from dinner one night and were approached for money 3-4 times on our six-block walk. After that we took a cab back to the hotel at night.
The fire alarm went off one morning around 8 AM. This is terrifying, especially when you know you're on the 10th floor. I raced downstairs in my PJs to find the desk clerk sullenly explaining that someone burned some toast in the breakfast room. No "I'm so sorry", no nothing.
In the "insult to injury" department, we were informed upon check in that there was a $25/day "deposit" that we would be charged despite the bill having been pre-paid. Why? Against any damage or charges we might incur. We were told we could eat at the restaurant and apply the $25 toward the bill. (There is a restaurant/bar attached to the hotel but it is extremely ordinary. No room service.) Talk about laughable--like anyone could possibly differentiate between the crappy condition of the room before or after our stay. I made sure we weren't charged for anything upon checkout.
Someone with some money and some imagination could make the Hotel Lawrence shine again. It's got good bones and a decent location. Even doing some immediate cosmetic fixes would help a lot. But until that happens, I can't recommend the hotel. They're trying, but not hard enough. « less

If you are looking for a simple place to rest your head in downtown Dallas, this is it ! Located near train and bus stations, this hotel is very centrally located. You can walk to many sights, and the tourist office is a couple of weeks. They offer free shuttle service within 3 mile area during the day to get around. A night, I would not recommend walking around area since sadly like a lot of US cities the downtown area is empty except for homeless. everyonedrives !! Nothing fancy, however, but clean. The lobby may put you off as it is a little run down but the rooms were nice and well maintained. And there is freebreakfast buffet included ! « less

This is an older hotel with some history right down the street from Dealy Plaza. It has a noir feel, and I will admit to saying, "Redrum" every time we walked down the hall.
Like a previous poster, we had trouble with both heat/AC and the sink and tub draining. The "artistic" bathroom didn't have a counter, so finding room for two women to get ready in the AM was a bit of a challenge. It was also a good thing that I brought my outlet strip because plugs were in short supply. The Internet worked well, even on an upper floor.
The continental breakfast in the "breakfast chamber" was better than the one served to conference goers at the Hyatt. We also were provided with coffee and 2 bottles of water each, daily, and they offer cookies and milk in the lobby in the evening. « less

The first room I stayed in the tub did not drain while I took a shower. Since the plumbing was not working right I was able to get another room. The second room I had no working heat. The last room was okay. I talked to the front desk & the guy told me I could not get a discount or a free night. I talked to the manager & he said the same thing. I'm trying to get in touch with the corporate office to get this matter resolved. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to my worst enemy. « less
