The Janice Mason Art Museum is much more than a museum. Originally known as the Cadiz Community Arts Center, the organization brings the arts, arts education and community participation opportunities to residents and visitors alike. Housed in an abandoned post office, the adapted exhibition space and classrooms of the museum helped preserve and improve the core downtown area.
With tourism a vital component of the local economy, the museum is an asset in offering quality art exhibitions by Kentucky artists as well as special shows featuring such internationally known artists as Chuck Close, Robert Rauschenberg, Sol Lewitt and Jasper Johns. The exhibition schedule for 2009 includes the Primary and Intermediate PTA Exhibit; the Middle and High School Exhibit; "Aqueous," the best of the Kentucky Watercolor Society; the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen Show; the Janice Mason Biannual Juried Show; "Segues: Works in Wool/Works in Paper," "Recreation," featuring works made from repurposed, reused, and recycled materials; and the "Recent Works by Sarah Gutwirth and Mary Jane Littleton."
The programs of the Janice Mason Art Museum are not limited to the visual arts. Programming includes dance, poetry contests, big band dinner dances and even a Broadway musical. The Janice Mason Art Museum partnered with local businesses and the schools to produce "Seussical the Musical," the first musical ever performed in Cadiz, with a local cast and crew from six-year olds to senior citizens.
Much of what the Janice Mason Art Museum accomplishes is achieved by volunteers who care passionately about art and about their community, and readily participate in almost every community function.
The museum offers a regular program of art and craft classes for adults taught by professional artists, as well as extensive education opportunities for area youth. The museum partners with the Housing Authority of Cadiz to provide membership to the museum for after-school program participants. Being a member of the museum allows these children to participate in programs that teach them how to draw, paint and share their creative ideas with other children. Being members of the Janice Mason Art Museum also means that these children receive mail that is addressed with their name on it. What is not obvious is how much this means to them.
The museum has also participated in the Kentucky Center and Kentucky Arts Council partnership outreach program, ArtsReach Kentucky, which allowed local children to tell the story of Cadiz in quilt form.
The Janice Mason Art Museum pays for transportation to bring school children to see exhibits that can be tied to the curriculum, and develops lesson plans to accompany the exhibits. The museum also offers low cost or free classes to children after school and every day in July. Its commitment to arts education is unparalleled by any other group in the region.
