Bedford was first settled in 1640 by Europeans and thrived on the agriculture and requisite industries. It was incorporated from parts of Concord and Billerica in 1729. There are many written accounts of Bedford's early history, including the naming of The Two Brothers Rocks, a noted historical site. Early residents John Winthrop and Deputy Governor Thomas Dudley agreed to divide their land at two large boulders on the Concord River, resulting in the site's name. Other important historical sites remain in Bedford, including the ruins of the John Wilson Corn Mill, the Job Lane House, and Fitch Tavern.
