The town was originally known as Lynn Village, but the name changed to South Reading. In 1856 it was changed again to Wakefield. The final change was made in honor of Cyrus Wakefield who formed the Rattan Works company in 1856 to create wicker furniture.
Another company that made Wakefield home was Paul K. Guillow, Inc., makers of balsa wood toy airplanes. The company was formed in 1926 by the former WWI naval aviator and is still going strong today with its headquarters in Wakefield.
As of the 2010 census, Wakefield had a population of 24,932 residents. Today, the city has increased its population but still retains its small-town aura and historic charm.
With a fine selection of quality accommodations to choose from and its close proximity to Boston, Wakefield is a good choice when planning a business or leisure travel itinerary.
