Rockwood is steeped in a history that intertwines its people's resourcefulness with the land's richness. In its developing stages, Rockwood was the site of a Cherokee village led by Chief Tallentuskie, a notable figure among the Cherokee in the late 18th to early 19th centuries. The city's industrial journey began when Union general John T. Wilder, who had previously managed a foundry in Indiana, recognized the potential in the iron ore and coal deposits within the Cumberland Plateau. Alongside investors from Indiana and Ohio, Wilder helped charter the Roane Iron Company on June 18, 1867. By the end of 1868, a blast furnace capable of producing 15 tons of iron daily had been established. This furnace, fueled by coke from local coking ovens, transformed iron ore into pig iron, which was then transported to Knoxville and Chattanooga and mainly served railroad construction. Roane Iron's foray into steel in the 1880s was short-lived due to the low quality of ore from Walden Ridge, and the venture was dropped in 1889. To foster the growth of the company town and avoid the disdain of Confederate sympathizers, Wilder named it after a lesser-known investor, William O.
