Aldergrove is an unincorported community in the Township of Langley, about 37 miles east of Vancouver. It has a land border crossing connecting it to Lynden, Washington. The area is the traditional territory of the Kwantlen First Nation.
Aldergrove gets its name from the alder trees that settlers saw when they arrived in the 1870s. Loggers, farmers, gold miners, and entrepreneuers were among the newcomers. Businesses opened as more residents came, a school was built, and mills were set up. The Great Northern Railway arrived in the early 1900s. Bus service began in 1914, when an opera house was also built. Later, the community of Shortreed was combined with Aldergrove.
The population was 15,498 in 2011, but Aldergrove was divided into two population centers in the Canada 2016 Census. The main part of Aldergrove in the Township of Langley shrank to a population of 12,007. The smaller part joined the city of Abbotsford and is called Aldergrove East. It has a population of 3,491.
The community is known as an urban center with rural surroundings that include hundreds of acres of cannabis grown by Canopy Growth Corporation. Aldergrove has been the site for the filming of numerous TV shows and movies. You can see the Kent farm from the television show "Smallville" in Aldergrove. And yes, the Greater Vancouver Zoo isn't in Vancouver. It covers 120 acres in Aldergrove. Originally created as a game farm, it became the Greater Vancouver Zoological Centre in 1995 and was renamed the Greater Vancouver Zoo in 1999. Since then, it has increased focus on conservation and education programs.
