Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, which is also known as AZA by its International Air Transport Association code, got its start as Higley Field in 1941. The following year, it was renamed Williams Field after Arizona native 1st Lt. Charles Linton Williams, who was killed while serving with the 19th Pursuit Squadron in 1927. After the United States military acquired the airfield, it was renamed Williams Air Base in 1948 and became a flight training field during World War II.
The base closed in 1993, and given the increased demand for flights at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, an alternative airport seemed like a logical choice. The runway was expanded to accommodate more airlines and opened as Williams Gateway Airport in 1994. The airport's name was once again changed in 2007, this time to its current moniker, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.
Today, the airport has three paved runways and averages 796 aircraft operations per day. Its busiest routes include destinations in Provo, Utah; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Fargo, North Dakota; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Whether you're flying to or from AZA on business or leisure, it's important to find a nearby accommodation that helps you reach your destination with ease.
