Welcome to the Motor City! Detroit is known for its car manufacturing and Motown. This vibrant city has a long history beginning in 1701 when it was first founded by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. With a fort and settlers in place, Detroit began its journey to become the city it is today. More from this guide...

"I would stay in Greektown close to Ford Field"
Author: , a Hotel Planner from , reviewed on 01-Nov-2013
Score of City:
5.0 / 5

Detroit is a city that has recently caught a bad rap in the media but if you know where to go, it can be a great experience. I would stay in Greektown close to Ford Field, Comerica Park, the Fox Theatre, and the Greektown Casino. You should be careful at night, don't wonder too far from Greektown but as long as you stay in that area you are safe. There are tons of restaurants ranging from upscale to your hole in the wall pub. Check the schedule for Saint Andrews Hall for a small, unique rock venue or the Detroit Symphony Orchestra if you like classical. I recommend visiting in the summer because there are tons of music, art, and food festivals going on the river front as well as the Woodward Dream Cruise in August where over 1,000,000 classic cars come to the area to cruise Woodward Ave.

Bar Chart: Upcoming 20 Days of Detroit Hotel Rates

Rates shown are nightly rates before taxes and do not necessarily reflect all Detroit, MI discounts available. The chart reflects the cheapest Detroit hotel for each day and each star rating category.

In 1802, Detroit was an incorporated village and not until 1815 did it change its status from village to city. It held the position as state capital from 1837 to 1847.

The cities emergence as the major site for car manufacturing came about due to its convenient location to railroad transportation that made it easier to ship and receive materials and finished products.

Detroit has also been associated with the "Motown Sound" that erupted in the city during the 1960s with the smooth sounds of soul music. The company remained in Detroit until 1972. History lives on as the company is now part of the Capitol Music Group located in the historic Capital Records Tower in Los Angeles.

When to Visit Detroit, MI

Detroit can easily be a year-round destination for those who enjoy summer heat, the cooler temperatures of spring and fall, or snow activities during the winter. The high season runs from May to September with the summer months being the busiest. Temperatures during this time can reach the low 80s making this an ideal time for outdoor activities. October to February is the low season with fewer crowds and temperatures in the 40s to 60s. For snow enthusiasts, winters are cold with temperatures in the 20s and 30s.

During special events, holidays, festivals, and sporting events scheduled throughout the year, expect crowds and higher rates. Summer is the busiest season because of the warm weather and school break. Fall and winter do not attract heavy crowds. Spring usually brings fewer visitors but the weather is relatively mild, which makes it a good time to visit.

Overall, Detroit receives an average of 183 days of sunshine and 126 days of precipitation each year. Rain averages 30 inches per year and snowfall can average 33 inches, which is above the average of 25 inches received annually in U.S. cities.
