Largely an agricultural area devoted to growing rhubarb up until the 1950s, Sterling Heights was known as Sterling Township prior to its incorporation in 1968. For a brief time in the 1830s, the community was known as Jefferson Township. As the suburb was developing, it received a large influx of people of varying European ethnicities, including Croatians, Albanians, Bosnians, Serbians, Slovenians, Macedonians, and Montenegrins, making it a culturally rich and diverse community. Over the years, Sterling Heights has been rated as one of the country's best small cities to live in, and has become a popular destination for travelers hoping to sightsee in Detroit.
Whatever your reasons for visiting Sterling Heights, it's important that you plan your trip carefully so that you can find the right hotel that allows you to enjoy everything this vibrant community has to offer.
Best Time to Visit Sterling Heights, MI
Winters in Michigan are long and frigid, so December to March is certainly not the best time to visit Metro Detroit or Sterling Heights. While you can enjoy drastically reduced hotel rates during the winter months, snowfall can make getting around difficult, and you may end up stranded in your hotel room, unable to sightsee. Still, if you don't mind braving the cold and snow, you have the chance to visit one of the city's most anticipated events: the North American International Auto Show.
Things start to warm up come spring, with temperatures ranging from about 40 to 50 degrees. While still a bit chilly, Michigan's weather can be quite pleasant in the spring, and tourists can take in the beautifully landscaped gardens and parks that abound in and around Sterling Heights. Detroit also hosts a number of spring festivals, including the critically acclaimed Movement music festival. Just be sure to book your hotel well in advance if visiting during a music festival, as they tend to fill up quickly.
Summer is peak season throughout Metro Detroit, and room rates in Sterling Heights tend to climb. Thankfully, you can still find affordable rooms throughout the community even at the height of summer, so don't let peak tourist season deter you from visiting Motown.
Fall is equally pleasant as spring in Sterling Heights. One of the great things about visiting Michigan in the fall is the abundance of events, including the Forever Festival, the Michigan Peach Festival, the Southfield International Festival, Charlevoix Apple Fest, and Hallowe'en in Greenfield Village. No matter when you choose to visit Sterling Heights, just be sure to research your options and book your room a few weeks or months in advance in order to score the best deal.
