In the 1940s, Mendocino experienced a decline in its economy and remained that way for over a decade. During the latter part of the 1950s, there was a resurgence when the Mendocino Art Center was founded.
The small community had 894 residents, according to the 2010 census. Mendocino maintains its small-town atmosphere and charm and is a premier destination for artists. Through the years, Mendocino has experienced a growth in hotels and bed-and-breakfasts due to its popularity as a vacation destination.
An interesting tidbit for classic TV enthusiasts is that the 1984-1996 series, "Murder She Wrote," which starred Angela Lansbury, used Mendocino as a location for many of its episodes. The town is also known for hosting the annual Mendocino Film Festival, which began in 2006, and the annual Mendocino Music Festival, established in 1986.
In 1971, a major portion of Mendocino was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
