"Visiting sports museums and halls of fame, like the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, is like taking a journey through the inspiring history of athletic accomplishments by exceptional sports legends."By Gabby Jones, Travel Writer
Located in Birmingham, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame (ASHOF) is a must-visit attraction for sports enthusiasts and history buffs. This respected institution is more than a mere museum, it is a rich tribute to over 300 athletics legends from Alabama. The hall boasts a collection of over 5,000 items that outline the sports heritage of the state and narrates the stories of famous athletes like Jesse Owens, Hank Aaron, and Paul "Bear" Bryant.
For over 50 years, the ASHOF has been honoring and inducting new athletes each year. It is located downtown in a big 33,000-square-foot building filled with sports items spread across three floors. Each one tells the story of how sports in Alabama have grown and achieved great things over the years. When you visit, you'll see artifacts like the Heisman Trophies won by athletes from Auburn University and even the hat worn by the famous "Bear" Bryant, the University of Alabama coach. All these items make your trip an experience, not just a tour. Curator Dr. Avalee Willoughby and Executive Director Scott Myers are responsible for the display, giving you a meaningful understanding of sports in Alabama.
Every year, the museum hosts an induction banquet that honors six to eight individuals who have made significant contributions to the world of sports. Among these inductees, at least two are recognized in the "seniors" category. It is a tribute to those who made their impact before the modern era of physical activity. In addition to these, the museum honors the "Distinguished Sportsman". It is usually a person with a strong link to Alabama sports. However, this could also be a "Distinguished American Sportsman," as decided by the museum's Board of Directors. Noteworthy recipients of the American Sportsman Award include President George H.W. Bush and Bob Hope.
However, a visit to the ASHOF isn't just about applauding the sports stars of Alabama. It's also an opportunity to immerse oneself in Alabama's spirit and draw inspiration from its history. After a day filled with such thrilling exploration, Birmingham offers a wide array of comfortable accommodations for visitors of all budgets. You can choose from various hotels, motels, inns, and suites dotted across the city. Whether you're on a solo trip, a romantic getaway, or a family vacation, you'll find an option that caters to all preferences and price points. Visitors can enjoy easy accessibility to the ASHOF as well as other city attractions, making Birmingham an ideal location for a fun and educational adventure. More from this guide...
