In the early 1800s, people began settling in the area. It was originally known as Shelbyville, but after the Civil War, it changed its name to honor the war hero Major John Pelham. When Pelham was incorporated in 1964, just 654 people called the city home. However, population growth has been rapid in recent years. By the 2010 census, more than 21,300 people called Pelham home.
You'll find Pelham 20 miles from Birmingham, but it feels a world away thanks to its beautiful location at the base of Oak Mountain and picturesque neighborhoods. Leave the traffic jams and crowds behind as you discover all that Birmingham has to offer.
When is the best time to visit Pelham, AL?
Visit Pelham in the fall to enjoy pleasant temperatures and low humidity. Rain tends to fall through much of the year, but the fall months are typically much drier than other times of the year. Tourist numbers also tend to be down during this season, so hotel prices tend to drop. The city is busier in early October thanks to the Oak Mountain Big Fall Festival, so book your room early if you hope to join in the fun.
Spring also has comfortable temperatures, but the season is prone to thunderstorms and even the occasional tornado. These inclement conditions continue through the summer. The rain can dampen summer vacation plans, although it does help cool the city, which is hot and steamy when dry.
Winters are mild, especially compared to other parts of the nation, but the often relentless rain continues. Snow is rare in Pelham.

Where can you stay and play in Pelham, AL?
Pelham is an active traveler's paradise, so take advantage of its recreational facilities while you're in the city.
At nearly 10,000 acres, Oak Mountain State Park is the largest state park in Alabama. Stretch your legs and explore Maggie's Glen, one of Alabama's most popular hiking spots. Make time to scale Shackleford Point. This 1,260-foot summit offers incredible views of the park below. Peavine Falls, a 65-foot tall waterfall, also provides a special photo opportunity. While its natural features are stunning, the man-made facilities are also worth checking out. Oak Mountain State Park is home to The Oaks, an 18-hole public golf course, a BMX motocross track, a petting farm, horse riding trails, tennis courts, and picnic areas.
If you enjoy water activities, you'll love Double Oak Lake, which is also located in Oak Mountain State Park. Swimming in the lake is a great way to cool down on steamy summer days in Pelham. Its marina offers canoes and pedal boats for hire. Largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bream commonly swim in the waters. Hire a flat bottom jon boat to give yourself the best chance of catching a seafood dinner.
The Oaks isn't the only public golf course in Pelham. Ballantrae Golf Club also gives visitors a chance to practice their putting. The scenic course overlooks Double Oak Mountain. Water hazards and bunkers offer some real challenges for keen golfers.
Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena is home to two professional hockey-sized ice rinks. If you're feeling unsteady, you can hone your skills at the arena's Skate School.
