Founded in 1873 by German immigrant Col. John Gottfried Cullmann, this bustling little town is full of Southern charm with a twist of German influence. Each year, the streets of downtown Cullman are roped off for their annual Oktoberfest, a celebration of their founder's German heritage. Craft vendors, live bands, German food, and of course beer are all available as you wander through the historic streets of downtown Cullman. The surrounding farmland inspires several other festivals held in town, including the Strawberry Festival, the Sweet Tater Festival, and Alabama Gourd Festival. Cullman is also the home of the Festhalle Market Platz, the largest timber-frame structure in Alabama and the home of the Cullman Farmers Market.
Due to Cullman's southern location, the weather is comfortable for most of the year. The best time to visit Cullman is in the spring or fall. The summers can be a little on the hot and sticky side and the winters a little on the cold side. Cullman holds events from April to December. Plan your visit around one of these events or just come to enjoy some of the other local attractions in the area. Smith Lake is great for anglers and boaters, and Cullman is home to many great museums, including the Crooked Creek Civil War Museum and the Evelyn Burrow Museum at Wallace State Community College. No matter when you visit, plan a stop at Johnny's Bar-B-Q. Johnny's has been open for over 50 years and has mouthwatering, Southern barbeque you will dream about for weeks to come.
