The first European contact with Staten Island was in 1520 by an Italian explorer, but it wasn't until 1609 when English-born Henry Hudson, sailing for the Dutch, explored the area that it was dubbed Staaten Eylandt after the Dutch phrase “States Island.” Though the first permanent settlement was made by the Dutch nearby in 1624, Staten Island was left untouched for decades due to conflicts between the settlers and local tribes. By 1670, the Native Americans gave up their claim to Staten Island to the English, which encouraged further expansion onto the island. Staten Island went on to play a prominent role in the American Revolutionary War and the end of slavery.

Today, Staten Island is a major part of New York City, but it still retains its coastal forests, tidal wetlands, and beautiful landscapes, even as urban development has expanded. Whatever your reason for visiting this beloved island, it's important to do your research so you can find the right hotel that allows you to enjoy everything Staten Island has to offer.

Best Time to Visit Staten Island, NY

Each season in New York City offers something uniquely special, so don't be afraid to book a trip to Staten Island any time of year. With that being said, winters in Staten Island are frigid with temperatures dipping into the 20s and 30s from December to February. If you can brave the cold and want to see The Big Apple decked out in holiday lights, you'll enjoy reduced hotel rates as long as you avoid visiting on the holidays.

Early spring ushers in warmer weather and a renewed interest in visiting New York. While you won't enjoy the best savings on hotel rates, you're more likely to find better deals than during the summer. Just be sure to pack an umbrella and rain boots, as springtime showers are common.

Summer is expectedly the most popular time to visit New York, which means that Staten Island can get crowded from June to August. Not only are travelers visiting from around the world, but local families are out enjoying the sunshine and local attractions, resulting in longer lines no matter where you go. If you want to experience New York City during the summer months, you'll be rewarded with events like the Metropolitan Opera in the Parks and the New York International Fringe Festival.

From September to November, hotel rates soar due to the beautiful fall colors and pleasant temperatures. If you can manage the steep prices, fall is simply one of the best times to visit Staten Island and appreciate its natural beauty. You'll also have access to local events, including the New York Film Festival and the ING New York City Marathon.
