The borough of Red Lion was originally settled in 1852 and named for one of the local pubs, The Red Lion Tavern. The town functioned primarily as a stop along the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad that brought passengers through York County and to Maryland. The city was also well-known for being one of the largest producers of cigars in the United States, producing over a million cigars a year. The Consumers Cigar Box Company is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and many locals still raise a cigar on New Year's Eve.
Nowadays, the town is widely known for its rich musical scene, going back for decades. The local high school has an award-winning music program, and the town is also home to an extensive array of local underground bands and independent artist. Visitors come from all over to enjoy the musical stylings of many up-and-coming artists from all genres, including funk, blues, rock, bluegrass, jazz, and country. They even have a strip known as Musician's Row where visitors can come see many of the local artists play.
