Cockeysville is a very old town and can trace its roots all the way back to Thomas Cockey, who was born in 1676 and settled in what is now Cockeysville in 1725. The town has several historically significant landmarks that have been left by notable residents as well as historical events. Some of the buildings in the area, for example, were used during the Civil War when Confederate forces pushed north of Baltimore to try and cut off the Union's capital.

Aside from its rich history, here are several reasons why you should visit this great city.

When to Visit Cockeysville

Maryland has four moderate seasons, but spring and fall are the best times to visit. The summers can be very humid because of the nearby reservoir, and the winters can be very windy. The intense wind during the winter makes the relatively modest cold feel like a polar chill. It snows occasionally in the winter, and some of the local parks will be open less often during the colder and shorter winter days since they're only open from sunrise to sunset. Fall is a fantastic time of year to visit, however, with the changing leaves filling trails and parks with warm autumn colors.

Most Luxurious Options in Cockeysville

4 Star Average Prices: $124.52

The luxury offerings in Cockeysville are located in Hunt Valley. If you're looking to stay in style with a familiar name, book your stay at the Embassy Suites by Hilton. Their traditional suite is chock-full of features, including a kitchenette and a living room with a pull-out couch. The rooms even have two flat-screen TVs, and some suites have a Keurig coffee maker.

The Embassy Suites also has an indoor pool, whirlpool, exercise room, a 24-hour business center, and a 6000 square-foot conference room. The hotel even has a bar and restaurant that not only serves complimentary breakfast but also hosts an evening reception with appetizers and drinks.

For people looking for a bed and breakfast experience, look no further than the Gramercy Mansion. This historic mansion was built in 1902 by the owner of the Pennsylvania Railroad and was given as a wedding present to his daughter. In the 1950s, the building became the headquarters of what was at the time called the Koinonia Foundation. This humanitarian organization would later become the Peace Corps and change its location.

After the Peace Corps changed its headquarters, the building became one of the nicest bed and breakfasts on the East Coast. The Gramercy Mansion has the highest rating of any hotel in Cockeysville and will make you feel right at home.

Most Affordable Hotels in Cockeysville

3 Star Average Prices: $115.54

Because Cockeysville is a hidden gem, finding a hotel on a budget is easy. One of the most affordable hotels is the Ramada Limited, which is conveniently located just off of I-83 and provides easy access to Baltimore and the Maryland State Fairgrounds. Depending on traffic, the drive into the city can take between 20 and 45 minutes, so try to plan accordingly if you are trying to go into Baltimore or Washington, D.C. In addition to its great location, the Ramada offers its visitors free WiFi, complimentary breakfast, and an outdoor pool.

The Extended Stay America is located near the Ramada, and is also one of the best budget options available in Cockeysville. This option lacks the outdoor pool that the Ramada boasts, but has slightly nicer rooms and also offers free WiFi and breakfast. The Extended Stay America also has a laundry service available. It also sits a mile or so closer to both Baltimore and the interstate, making it a more convenient location for people looking to go into one of the nearby cities to the south.

Where are the real discounts in Cockeysville

If you get a thrill from saving money, you'll be excited to hear that there are several hotels in Cockeysville that offer discounts during certain times of the year. The Holiday Inn Express, for example, often offers potential guests deep discounts if they aren't entirely booked. This hotel has an excellent location. It's only 3 minutes off Interstate 83 and within walking distance of a shopping center with a variety of restaurants and shops. It's also only a short drive from Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

Also off of Interstate 83, about 5 minutes closer to the city, is the Radisson Hotel, which often features discounts from 5 to 15 percent. This hotel is ideal for those traveling for business, as it is outfitted with every amenity a business person could need, including a 24-hour fitness center, a bar, two ballrooms, and 17 meeting rooms. The rooms are spacious and have free WiFi, coffeemakers, and desks in every room.

The Red Roof Plus in Cockeysville is already a very affordable hotel even without any discount, but depending on how full they are and how far in advance you're making your booking, you can often find additional discounts. With the discount, this is the most budget-friendly hotel in the area and offers guests an affordable stay in a decent hotel. The rooms are all non-smoking and pet-friendly, and some rooms come with a kitchenette. The hotel is also in a relatively central location, with easy access to both Baltimore and Loch Raven.

High-Value Hotels in Cockeysville

Some people aim to get the most bang for their buck, and there are plenty of hotels in Cockeysville that offer just that. Delta Hotels offers a 3-star hotel nearby to the Embassy Suites. Although it doesn't offer all of the amenities that the Embassy Suites has, it does have an indoor and outdoor pool, so you can take a relaxing dip no matter what time of year you visit. The Delta also sits on a 17-acre property that creates a tranquil atmosphere both in and around the hotel grounds.

Probably the highest value option in Cockeysville is the Quality Suites. This 3-star hotel is priced like some of the budget options mentioned earlier but offers spacious, smoke-free rooms, laundry service, and has access to an outdoor pool and a basketball court. Although the Quality Suites offers all of these great features, the rooms are priced affordably because the hotel is far from the interstate and is isolated from most of the cities and other hotels in the area. It is, on the other hand, closer to many of the parks and reservoirs in the area, so if you plan on hiking or spending time outdoors, this hotel is perfect for you.

Must-see Parks and Trails

Cockeysville is a great destination for people who love the great outdoors. The area is dotted with numerous parks, trails, and Loch Raven, a beautiful reservoir. Loch Raven provides water for most of the county as well as the city of Baltimore. Interestingly enough, the reservoir was made by a dam originally built in 1881, which was then expanded in 1914. The lake offers scenic walks and also has paddle boats for rent, so you can go out on the water and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

For those looking for a much longer walk, the NCR trail might be a good option. This trail is more than 40 miles long and extends well into the neighboring state of Pennsylvania. It runs alongside the Gunpowder River, which feeds the Loch Raven Reservoir. The trail offers access to the river and is perfect for those looking to do some fishing. You can also ride through the park on horseback.

The area also has a number of regional and state parks, one of which is the Oregon Ridge Park. With over a thousand acres of woods and trails, Oregon Ridge Park has plenty of space to wander. The park is also known for its Fourth of July celebration, which features not only a classic fireworks display, but the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra comes to play for the park's visitors each year.

The park is located on the grounds of an old iron quarry and a marble quarry, both of which can still be seen. The deep quarries are flooded with water and give the illusion that they extend down to almost infinite depths.

No matter what kind of activities you would like to do on your trip, Cockeysville probably has it. If you want to get a taste of the big city, Baltimore and Washington D.C. are both no more than an hour away and offer some of the world's best tourist destinations. However, if you are tempted to stay within the bounds of Cockeysville, there are plenty of options to explore the area's wilderness. From beautiful parks to the nation's capital, Cockeysville truly has it all.
