Carlisle has a long history, and the original plans for the settlement were created by John Armstrong Sr. in 1751. During the Revolutionary War, the city was a munitions depot. In the years leading up to the Civil war, Carlisle was one of the stops on the Underground Railroad. The city also saw war in 1863 during the Battle of Carlisle. Today, there are several buildings and areas of town that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
