Northport dates back to 1656, when it was first settled by the English. Due to its proximity to the water and pastures perfect for cattle, it became known as Great Cow Harbour. It remained an agrarian community for over a century until the shipbuilding industry arrived in the 1830s. As the newly arrived industry took over, the village was renamed to Northport and steadily became one of the most flourishing villages in the area. It wasn't until the adoption of steel-hulled ships that the industry declined, giving Northport plenty of time to grow.
In more recent history, Northport expanded and annexed quite a few neighboring villages after its official incorporation in 1894. While the old trolley lines are still visible, modern Northport has everything you'd expect from a modern village and more, including specialty shops, parks, and other unique attractions. If you want to experience everything Northport has to offer, you'll need to find a hotel that can offer the experience you're looking for.
When do you want to visit Northport, NY?
While you'll always find something exciting to do in Northport, you'll find very different experiences offered in each season. For example, highs in the summer can easily surpass 80 degrees, while winter lows in January and February are well below freezing. Even the mean temperatures in January and February are typically at freezing or below, which means you should avoid a winter visit if you have an aversion to the cold. The rest of the year is fairly comfortable, though the gentle breezes in March and April can make the spring feel a bit colder than you'd expect.
No matter which time of year you travel, bring your umbrella. Rain rarely brings about serious weather conditions, but showers can happen fairly often. The worst month to travel if you're trying to stay dry is December, in which it typically rains for over a quarter of the month, accumulating over 5 inches. It's fairly common to see rain in June as well, but if you're looking to stay dry, July and August have the lowest chances of rain. Just keep in mind that the humidity that peaks in June is still around for the rest of the summer.
Northport doesn't really have a peak travel season, as travelers tend to come fairly often — every other month or so — with the exception of early winter. For example, a lot of travelers visit in July, while June and August are fairly slow. Tourism increases again in October before drastically falling for winter. Strangely enough, it rises again in February, then drops again significantly in March. If you're looking for affordable hotel rates, try to avoid July, October, and February. Spring might be the best time to travel if you want good rates and comfortable weather.
