Furthermore, Commack is unlike other cities because it has no Main Street or downtown. Small businesses and homes cover the town's 12 square miles. So the closest thing you'll get to a town square is a strip mall with a Macy's, Toys'R'Us, and Target.
The great schools, short drive to the North Shore beaches, and friendly inhabitants draw people to the area. Visitors can also enjoy Commack's nature reserves, community centers, and baseball field complexes, where dedicated parents gather to watch their kids after school and on the weekends.
The city's name comes from the Native American word for the area: Winnecomac. It means "Pleasant Lands," and for the residents that live in Commack, the name is fitting.
When are the best times to visit Commack, NY?
The weather is pleasant in Commack most of the year. On average, it has a 20-30 percent chance of precipitation, with the highest chances in winter and the lowest chances during the summer. From December to March the temperatures typically stay in the 40s during the day and in the 20s and 30s at night.
June, July, August, and September are the hottest months with the lowest chance of rain. The temperatures range from the high 70s and 80s during the day to the mid- to low 60s at night. The weather during the summer is perfect for visiting the North Shore beaches.
The high chance for precipitation during winter makes Commack uninviting this time of year. Roads are often wet and iced over, with long periods of low temperatures causing ice and snow to persist.
The area is also susceptible to severe winter storms called nor'easters, which bring heavy rain, snow, blizzard conditions, and hurricane-force winds. You don't want to get caught in this weather, so the best time of year to visit is the summer. Plus, the warmer months are better for exploring nature.

The Marion Carll Farm is a historic home that was once open to the public and has a contentious history. The property, dating back to 1701, is on the National Registry of Historic Places and includes an 1860 farmhouse, garage, smokehouse, milk house, horse barn, carriage house, and sheep barn. The Commack County School District took over the property in 1969 when the owner bequeathed it to the district on the condition that it be used as a historic site and educational farm.
Marion Carll was born on the farm and lived in the Commack area throughout her life, becoming very involved in local education. In her will, she stated that she wanted to gift the property to the school district so that it would be used for educational purposes and to prevent it from falling into the hands of a real estate investor who would develop the property for profit.
In 2012, after the district stopped using the property as intended by Marion Carll, her family sued to take back ownership. For years, the property has been the subject of a bitter legal battle between Marion Carll's descendants and the school district. However, on Jan. 18, 2017, a judge ruled in favor of the school district, allowing it to keep ownership of the property. It is unclear if the school district will use the property as intended by Marion Carll, who was passionate about giving back to the community and preserving historic sites for the purpose of education.
