Located about 30 miles from New York City, Bohemia is a diverse locale with many of its residents tracing their heritage back to Ireland, southern Italy, and former Czechoslovakia. In recent years, newcomers have flocked to Bohemia from Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island, contributing to its population boom.
What we now know as Bohemia was first inhabited by the Secatogue tribe. Slavic immigrants founded the area in 1855. Since many of these settlers came from the Central European Kingdom of Bohemia in the present-day Czech Republic, they dubbed their new home Bohemia to honor their history. Many of these Bohemian nationals also embodied the enlightened and free-spirited lifestyles that are synonymous with Bohemianism. Attempts were made to change the town's name since people felt “Bohemia” was tied too much to a single ethnic group, but none of these efforts ever received adequate public support.
Bohemia, New York, remained a relatively small village until Long Island developed after World War II. By 1955, the population grew to 3,000. Today, about 11,000 people call Bohemia home. Whatever your reason for visiting Bohemia, it's essential to find the right hotel that allows you to explore everything this hamlet and Long Island have to offer.
When should you visit Bohemia, NY?
Bohemia experiences beautiful seasons throughout the year, but the most popular time to visit in the summer when everyone can enjoy Long Island's beaches. High temperatures settled into the low 80s in July and August, creating ideal weather for outdoor recreation. The only downside, however, is that summer ushers in higher hotel rates across Long Island, so expect to pay more for your accommodations. You'll also encounter bigger crowds during the summer months, which can make visiting certain attractions difficult, or at least more time-consuming.
Visiting in the shoulder seasons can help you save on hotel rates and avoid crowds. Higher temperatures range from the high 50s to the high 60s in April and May, with lows occasionally dipping to the low 40s. As long as you pack accordingly, you can enjoy perfectly brisk weather along with the blossoming scenery. Fall temperatures are slightly warmer, averaging in the mid-60s and 70s in September and October.
Winters on Long Island are very cold, so don't be surprised if you encounter temperatures in the low 20s from December to March. Despite the chill, visitors can enjoy indoor attractions at their leisure, so plan on escaping to a spa or museum if you visit during the low season. If you do visit during the winter months, be on the lookout for local events like Long Island Winterfest. These festivals and celebrations can make any wintertime getaway worth your while.
