A tornado struck the town with devastating results and Dr. Mayo went to work to heal the injured. Afterwards, Mother Moes from the Sisters of Saint Francis approached Dr. Mayo to open a hospital.
The original hospital, St. Mary's, was established and Dr. Mayo acted as a consulting physician while his sons saw patients and performed surgeries. Dr. Mayo passed in 1911 and the remaining founders created the Mayo Properties Association and turned the private medical practice into a not-for-profit. Over the decades, the Mayo Clinic grew and became a premier medical facility whose very name suggests the best in medical care.
