Many who visit the area stop at Dishman Hills Natural Area, the Saltese Uplands Conservation Area, or Liberty Lake Regional Park. The Spokane River offers much to do and see in both cities.

For thousands of years before the first permanent settler arrived, the Upper Band of the Interior Salish Indians called the area home. Traders and trappers called these Natives the “Spokanes,” or “children of the sun.” At first, the Natives welcomed settlers, trappers, and traders. In the 1850s, an uprising occurred and the Spokanes left their lands defeated.

Over the next several decades, the population grew because of silver mining, river transportation, and the railroad that arrived in the late 1800s. The city steadily grew over the next century becoming a hub for industry and retirement. Spokane Valley officially incorporated in 2003 and is currently home to over 96,000 residents.

Shopping in Spokane Valley consists of a few large, discount retailers, several locally owned shops, and one shopping mall. The Spokane Valley Mall houses large stores including Macy's, Sears, and JCPenney. Over 100 stores cover two levels and boast wares ranging from clothing and jewelry to home goods and food.

Dining in Spokane Valley is sure to meet any craving you have. Many locally owned diners and bistros dot the popular thoroughfares, along with diverse options like Thai, Mexican, and Indian. There are a few nationally known chains and some high-end eateries.

Because Spokane Valley covers a small area that converges with other communities, the number of hotels in the city limits may seem limited. It's not a concern at all. There are dozens of hotels within a 10-mile radius of the city's center.

When to Visit Spokane Valley, WA

From December through February, expect cold, wet weather in the city. High temperatures average in the 30s and low 40s with many days barely breaking the freezing mark. Low temperatures hover in the high 20s during the winter months. Expect rain or snow once or twice a week without experiencing serious accumulations. Traveling during winter can save you a bundle on hotel rates since this is the off season for the city.

Ring in the New Year at Spokane's First Night, a celebration spanning New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Browse vendor booths, fill up on tasty treats, and stay amused with live music and artist demonstrations.

From March to May, you can expect chilly days and rain. Spring temperatures warm from the low 50s in March to the high 60s in May. Low temperatures start at near 30 degrees in March and top out in the mid-40s in May. Expect rain a few days a week, but in small amounts. Tourist amounts increase a little in springtime which causes a slight increase in hotel rates.

The area rings in springtime with the Lilac Festival in May. For over 80 years, locals and visitors have gathered to celebrate the newness and blooming beauty of spring. The festival's mission statement is “Honoring our military, recognizing our youth, and showcasing our region.” You will see these aspects in the parade, garden tours, live entertainment, and food.

Summer months in Spokane Valley are pleasant and busy. Daytime temperatures are comfortable, with highs in the mid-70s in June and the mid-80s in July and August. Low temperatures stay in the 50s during the summer months, making mornings and late nights a little chilly. Precipitation tapers off during July and August, giving these months the highest visitor numbers. Expect higher hotel rates, limited availability, and higher fares during July and August especially.

Check out one of the Pacific Northwest's premier art celebrations at ArtFest, held the first weekend in June. Dozens of artisans showcase their glass, ceramic, jewelry, wood, and fine art over three days. There are ample food booths and many live music performances. Combine that with interactive exhibits and demonstrations for the kids, and you can't miss it.

Autumn brings crisp temperatures and the return of rain. High temperatures fall from the mid-70s in September to the mid-40s by November. Low temperatures fall from the mid -40s to the 30s by fall's end. Expect rain or snow one to two days a week and windier conditions. Traveler numbers decrease, allowing you to score better deals on hotels throughout the fall months.

For all things barbecue, you have to go to Pig Out in the Park. Over 50 restaurants craft over 250 items for a fair price. Indulge in tasty treats while listening to any of the 75 (or more!) bands ranging from Reggae and Bluegrass to Barbershop and Blues.
