Coeur d'Alene is named after the Coeur d'Alene people, a tribe of Native Americans who lived in the region. French fur traders named them Coeur d'Alene in the late 18th century. It means "heart of an awl," and it refers to their great business and trading skills. Coeur d'Alene has lots of hotels where you can relax, whether you're looking for a luxury resort or an inexpensive place to spend your vacation. After you find the right hotel, you can enjoy all the city's great attractions.

When to Visit Coeur d'Alene, ID

The best time to visit Coeur d'Alene is in summer when the weather is warm and sunny. You can enjoy weekly concerts in Coeur d'Alene City Park and Sherman Square Park and shop at the weekly farmers' market. Car d'Lane is a Classic Car Weekend in June for cars made in or before 1975. There's a cruise on Friday night and a car show on Saturday. The city holds the largest 4th of July Festival in the region, with a parade and live music and local vendors at Coeur d'Alene City Park. At dusk, you can watch the fireworks over the lake.

The annual Oktoberfest features live music and samples of several local brews. Visitors who sample beer get a keepsake beer glass. On Halloween, kids can Trick or Treat the Downtown. There's also a Trunk or Treat show with classic cars that have decorated trunks. The Wine Extravaganza in April has more than 65 wines for you to taste. You also get a complimentary wine glass, similar to Oktoberfest. You can go skiing and snowboarding at Silver Mountain Resort from late November to early April. In summer, you can enjoy golf, fishing, biking, or rafting. The resort is about half an hour from Coeur d'Alene.
